The Kamehameha Lions Club Foundation has received official commendation from U.S. Attorney, Edward H. Kubo, Jr., for donating blocks of tickets to the "Wounded Warriors" community support program for the upcoming "Laughs for Lions" Comedy Benefit on August 22nd. To date, over 50 injured soldiers, sailors, and marines from the Iraq and Afghanistan war have been given free seats to enjoy the annual show at the Mamiya Theatre on the St. Louis School campus in Kaimuki.

Attorney Kubo, who serves as program director for Hawaii's Wounded Warrior program, known as Malama na Koa, says, "Hawai`i has approximately 330 Wounded Warriors recovering from their wounds and injuries at Schofield Barracks, Tripler Army Medical Center, and Kaneohe Marine Corp Base. The majority of them are from the mainland and they have no family here in the Islands. For these reasons, we formed Malama na Koa to generate public awareness and facilitate donations to these Warriors during their difficult period of recovery. This is why we are most appreciative that [the Kamehameha Lions Club Foundation] has stepped forward to recognize the need for enjoyment and laughter in their lives by donating tickets to your event."

The Wounded Warriors will be treated to a fantastic show this year, featuring an entire night of comedy, music, and magic from Harrah's in Las Vegas with "Best of Las Vegas" award winner, Pete "Big Elvis" Vallee, comedienne & impressionist Bethany Owen, and master mystifier Dixie Dooley. A pre-show mixer includes a fantastic celebrity silent auction, plus free food, beverages, and the music of local Waikiki favorite, the beautiful Anjj Lee. See http://www.LaughsForLions.com for full details.

There are still a few seats available for the show if you'd like to attend, or, if YOU would like to donate a ticket to host a Wounded Warrior. "Laughs For Lions" will be a sellout and there will be NO SALES AT THE DOOR that evening, so please make your purchases as soon as possible.

Besides programs like the Wounded Warriors, the Kamehameha Lions Club Foundations uses all of the profits from "Laughs For Lions" to support community projects for the blind & disabled as well as to provide youth scholarships. Donations to the KLC Foundation are tax deductible.

For tickets or donation information, visit http://www.laughsforlions.com, or call (808) 528-1073.

The club meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday 6pm at the St. Louis Alumni Association Clubhouse. Find out more about the Kamehameha Lions Club Foundation by visiting their website; http://www.klcfoundation.org

  • A Tribute to Hawaii's Wounded Warriors with Canoe Racing

2009 Wounded Warrior Canoe Regatta 053009

Honolulu, Hawaii (May 30, 2009) - The 2009 Wounded Warrior Canoe Regatta was a big success as it kicked off its inaugural racing event today at the Pearl Harbor Rainbow Marina.  A crowd of over 600 gathered and cheered for their teams who paddled hard for their branch of service or civilian agency.  "The outpouring of interest and support for this event was fantastic," said event organizer U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo.  "We expected at the most 20 teams to compete, but we got 64 teams competing in today's event."

The event was organized as a tribute to our Wounded Warriors in Hawaii and was not a fundraiser.  Teams representing Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves went head-to-head against one another, and against teams from our Wounded Warriors, Honolulu Adaptive Canoe Paddlers, along with the Honolulu Police and Fire Departments teams.  We are proud to say that our Warrior in Transition teams did very well in the competition and received medals for their racing times.

Family Strong Hawaii congratulates Mr. Gervin Miyamoto and Navy Region MWR for coordinating the event, and to everyone who made this tribute to our recuperating Soldiers and Marines so successful.  Everyone agreed that this was a wonderful way of ending Military Appreciation Month in Hawaii.  See all of you again at the Wounded Warrior Canoe Regatta next year!   Go Wounded Warriors!

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii (Jul 09, 2008) – More than 100 wounded warriors and their family members gathered in anticipation for a meet and greet with Grammy Award-nominated American country star Billy Ray Cyrus at the Warrior Assistance Center here, on the Fourth of July.

As the performer entered the building, one could not decide who was more excited – the star or the fans – each thanking the other for their presence.

"Our wounded warriors are very deserving of an opportunity like this," said Kristina Kalili, outreach program coordinator at the Warrior Assistance Center. "The Soldiers are excited and feel honored to have a superstar donate [his] time for a visit." [More of the Article]
